THUNDER BAY -- The province’s Special Investigations Unit is being called in to investigate a Sunday morning death at the Thunder Bay Police Station.

According to the SIU a 44-year-old man was found in medical distress in his cell at the Balmoral Street station before 3 a.m. and paramedics responding found the man deceased.

The man was arrested by Thunder Bay Police Service officers around 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon “in an intoxicated condition in violation of a court order” and was being held at the station.

City police confirmed the incident in a media release issued in the afternoon but would not provide further comment while the SIU investigation remains ongoing.

The SIU is sending three investigators and two forensic investigators.

The SIU is called in to investigate whenever an individual dies in custody or there is an incident involving a police officer.
