Bird causes power outage that affects 17,000

By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com

About 17,000 Thunder Bay residents went without power for a portion of Monday’s civic holiday.

An explosion atop a north-side transformer appears to be the culprit.

Fire crews responded to the call at about 10 a.m. Fire captain Anthony Smodis said after they arrived on scene at the corner of Balsam Street and the Thunder Bay Expressway witnesses told firefighters they saw a green glow that then turned to orange, sparking the power outage.

No injuries were reported and Thunder Bay Hydro said a bird was to blame.

Power has since been restored to all customers, the utility told Thunder Bay Television.
