TRAFFIC: Work begins at Red River Road and Junot Avenue

THUNDER BAY -- Construction may lead to traffic woes at a busy north-side intersection for the next week.

Construction crews have begun work at the corner of Red River Road and Junot Avenue. While the streets will remain open, the traffic flow will be restricted.

Work crews discovered that the wiring system under the street was damaged by the past few winters, and as a result they will be replacing that wiring.

For the time being, overhead cables have been connected to keep the traffic signals working.

City of Thunder Bay Project Engineer Rick Harms says the way it is set up now, the afternoon rush hour should not be affected by the construction.

Harms adds that by early next week, the underground work should be wrapped up and the additional work that will continue after that time should not be disruptive to traffic.

While this is down to one lane, they need to stop the left hand turns from Red River Road onto Junot (going towards Grandview Mall). I sat through 3 lights this morning because of people who insisted on making that left hand turn, effectively holding up all of the traffic behind them. I normally would be turning left there as well, but due to the circumstances I went straight and turned further down the road where the traffice wasn't confined to one lane. How can they say it won't cause a problem at rush hour when it was a nightmare at 11:00 this morning?

the intersection is a nightmare at best, complicated by the fact that people insist on sitting in the middle of the intersection during red lights. I hope this goes quickly and smoothly for all.

I hope they also fix that man hole bump in the east thru lane. Feels like your vehicles needs a wheel alignment when you bounce over it.
To all the drivers: Please slow down in the construction zone(s) around town the person you hit may be a loved one. Also, put down the phones, ice caps, make up, etc..pay attention to the signs and flag people they're there to help navigate you safely thru. Don't yell at us from your air conditioned vehicle because you missed a sign or inconvenienced for a couple of minutes while a truck unloads gravel.
If you don't like the delays, remember there is more than one road that will get you there.
