THUNDER BAY -- An eight-year-old girl is dead following a Monday morning domestic dispute on the city’s south side.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials on Monday afternoon confirmed she was the victim in the incident on the 400 block of West Donald Street, after an alleged domestic attack by the mother’s ex-boyfriend.

The identity of the girl is not being released.

The 38-year-old suspect is also dead after being taken into custody after a standoff in the Wharton Street address later in the morning. Police said the man had injuries that appeared to have been sustained prior to being arrested.

Emergency responders were called to the Donald Street address around 3 a.m. to what was originally believed to be an assault.

The girl was taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre where she was pronounced dead. The mother has non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect fled the scene prior to the arrival of police.

At 7:30 a.m. police were called regarding a vehicle parked at the end of Wharton Road, which is located off Oliver Road west of the Thunder Bay Expressway.

Officers responded and discovered the vehicle matched the description of the one driven by the suspect.

The area was then contained by city police officers, as well as OPP tactical units, as they tried to communicate with the man.

Police were able to arrest the suspect around 11:30 a.m., shortly after multiple loud bangs were heard with smoke visibly rising from the end of the road.

An ambulance then left the scene with lights and siren on, accompanied by a police escort.

The ambulance took the man to hospital, where he died a short time later.

As a result, the province’s Special Investigations Unit is invoking its mandate and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the man.
