By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com

The city has sold Municipal Golf Course to Bruno’s Contracting Limited for $650,000.

Council formally approved the deal behind closed doors at its July 28 meeting. The purchase price of the 37-hectare property matches its appraised value, according to a release issued by the city on Monday morning.

The city closed the course after the 2013 golf season.

Was this advertised, I would of bought it for $750,000. I guess it was another closed door meeting.

No they had a open offer period.

Does anyone think it could possibly be rebranded as a discount 9-hole course as part of the Whitewater facility and still be a golf course?

$650,000 for 37 hectares ! YIKES, are you kidding me ?

Joe-King says:
Hopefully the new owners will actually make something useful there as golf didn't work
8/11/2014 2:31:32 PM
Tannoy says:
Its not that golf didn't work its that the city has no idea how to run a golf course. See when the number of players drops the city raised green fees. Higher prices mean less can afford to play as often so the numbers drop again, so the city raises prices... you see the pattern? In other centres instead of raising prices they've done the opposite so more people golf at a lower prices meaning you make more money overall. Unfortunately nobody that runs our local courses took a basic economics course.

37 Hectares for $650K????? My 1/2 acre lot was over 80k!!! What am I missing here...?

Apples to Oranges. Your buying a lot with services, roads etc... They are buying basically a grass field with trees.

portland39 says:
This will become a new subdivision... Oliver Paipoonge gets it... the demand for the lots in this area is very high and they won't fight tooth and nail against it like Maplewood which is within city limits like the city council did.

jaxoon says:
Maybe but why are there so many empty lots in King G's park?
8/11/2014 4:55:42 PM
Dockboy says:
Marak. What your missing is the deal of the century. 37 hectares is 91.43 acres. At a purchase price of $650,000.00 the purchasere paid $7,109.27 per acre. Not a bad deal.

Were there any other bids? How long was this on the market for? Who else bid on tnis property?

Read the story before commenting. It was sold for its appraised value. It wasn't a steal and it was advertised for sale.
Ooops! I forgot I was addressing all the whiners and real-estate experts living in Tbay.

Enquirer says:
Now, now, mystified.

Where would the fun be if people on here went by facts and not gut feelings? Come on, surely there must be a conspiracy down at city hall rather than something actual being what it appears to be.

Just think about this for a second: a group of logical people conducting meaningful debate based upon verified facts on this website...*shudders*...I know, it scares me too.

We all know the TBNewswatch complainer recipe by now: 1 cup of whine, 2/3 cup conspiracy theorist, 1/4 cup lies about own expertise - mix well until facts are barely recognizable. Add a dash of police bashing and a soupçon of city council detesting. Bake until burnt to a crisp, providing a bitter taste. Decorate with multiple accounts and an unnecessary amount of agree clicks on your own post. Serve.

Would you sell your house at appraised value, or market value? You know those can be thousands of dollars apart, and usually market value is much greater.
I would rather ask questions and be called a whiner, than bury my head in the sand and pretend all is well, only to get my butt kicked from every angle and not even know who was doing the kicking.

Its was low because in order to subdivide you must install a sewage plant. There is only one person out there who all ready has one. His name starts with a B and ends with a O. and its not that far away.

bigroo says:
no need for another subdivision.at that price anyone could have kept it open as a golf course or multifuncional community property and manage it properly.i do not like the idea of the rich getting richer off us poor souls that are looking for more things to do.buy the land off us for pennies and sell it back to us for dollars wow what a joke...

Commonsense says:
So, where does "sale of property" go in the municipal budgets?
Notice the Renew Thunder Bay fund is somewhat depleted.....
Sounds like it should go into road paving for government road.
Or better yet, renewal of other recreational facilities, since this was a recreation facility that was sold.
8/11/2014 10:52:14 PM
Royalflush says:
Wouldn't the event centre/hockeyrink be considered a recreational facility? Is there a pattern evolving here?

Um do you really expect them to decide this at the snap of a finger...give them time to review their options.

There was another article posted today about it...geez

You will not see any subdivision it is going to be turn into a winery growing grapes and making wine has the right type of soil for growing grapes. Some believe this has been in the works for fifteen years.

There is a big time demand for residential living outside of Thunder Bay.
Its awesome set up. You build a big house without the crazy taxes and water rates that TBay offers you currently.

You are not far from the city either so you can hump in your Hummer and drive to the many shopping and other services and leave when you are done.
It makes sense.

THe real questions here are...WHY DO YOU CARE? Even if you had $650 000 would you have bought this land? Why is it EVIL for a developer to buy land and develop it? Where is the damned conspiracy here? The reason it is so cheap is because it is zoned outside city limits (from what I am told) and besides it has no services and isn't divided or ready for development. All I can say is I am surprised the Mayor is being blasted for allowing this sale since some of you have said it was "a steal" and he said he would get rid of crime after all!! <---SARCASM Sheesh

I lost brain cells reading these comments... kudos to the ones who see the value of this deal. land with no sewage is only useful to those willing to invest in the expensive infrastructure. It was an open bid... Bruno won. End of story.

Real Estate prices in this area are going through the roof. Many older 3 bedroom bungalows are now selling at around $250,000. dollars.

A beautiful 9 hole golf course with a club house and living quarters sold for $ 650,000 dollars.

HARD TO BELIEVE!
