Door-to-door

Shelter House is going door-to-door to try and stock up for the winter.

Volunteers, which the local emergency shelter is still in need of, will meet at Tarbutt Park Wednesday at 6 p.m., grabbing a shopping cart and hitting the streets to ask for donations. Assistant fundraiser Ken Miller said demand is always on the rise, putting a strain on the shelter's supplies.

"I would love to fill our pantries up that's for sure," he said.

"Hopefully it'll be a good one."

Executive director Patty Hajdu said around 170 people are heading to Shelter House every day. In the past people may have needed a meal a couple of times a week but the lack of affordable housing and low social assistance rates are forcing people to use the meal service more often these days.

"We see the same faces for both meals every day," she said.

Many times it's the only meal a person will get. Shelter House is now making as much food as possible, meaning more donations are needed now more than ever.

"Just to make sure everyone is truly full when they leave or doors," she said.

No offence to this group, but some of us folk in this area are having trouble enough maintaining our own families.

I have to agree with you on this. Maybe they should try the upper class neighbourhoods instead. I don't use shelter house, but go hungry regularly because my CPP comes no where near being able to pay bills and buy food. And if you don't have money for food, you don't have money for bus fare to get to a food bank!

Iv already made my contribution, Time to see how big Thunderites Hearts truly are.. When i was young homeless man living on the streets of Toronto, I depended on the generosity of others. Time to do my part for the greatest city in the world

Here's an idea, cut out the free needles, crack pipes and junkie starter sets (kits) and gain far more respect in the city.
Why would I donate anything to one of the major causes of the emabrassing discarded needle situation we have here.

WOW! First of all, it's the shelter house that is looking for donations to help feed, clothe, and provide shelter for the homeless. The needle exchange program is run by the district health unit. They are separate entities with separate funding. one has nothing to do with the other. Secondly NEITHER of them give out crack pipes, and I won't even guess as to what you mean by a "junkie starter set (kit)". You should be embarrassed since every word in your comment is either untrue or an absolute fabrication to support your prejudiced point of view. but hey, what ever makes you feel better about not donating to charity right?

Too make sure they get their food for people on assistance rather then money they should give them food cards and those cant be re-sold. Rather then spending it on other things.

Are we sure that all of this food is really necessary. I've seen the same people eating at Shelter House, Grace Place, Dew Drop and the Salvation Army Soup van. Then they go to the food bank to pick up bags of groceries. Is this really helping? Maybe just giving people an amount of money that they are expected to live on montn-to-month would be a better approach.

Give them money ? I'm sure some of them would love that . Too bad the shelter has to follow Govt food regulations , they could cull the deer on Mission Island and feed the diners venison .

Patty now is going to get Shelter House to go door-to-door for food donations.
No thanks.
I pay enough for taxes, utilities, etc and I know people who can barely keep ends meet at months end.
And some of them are people living beyond their means and just trying to look good.

You can tell the difference between those of us who have gone hunger due to poverty, and those of you who never have.

I don't earn much, but I know what it's like to be hungry. I will give whatever I have to give.

When do we as a society say enough free handouts. I have supported various programs for over 40 years and nothing has changed except the number of people seeking help. Obviously the system of giving free food and money to people and getting nothing in return is not working. Maybe it is time to set up some work programs and let them help seniors shovel their driveways in winter, pick up litter in summer, set up community gardens and maintain them. If these same people expect our society to feed and house them is it wrong for society to expect some help in return?

My taxes keep going up to support all levels of Government and corporations like Ontario Hydro, Union Gas and the oil companies. Why is it up to me to continue to support people who refuse to help themselves?

i am not a bleeding heart, but it just takes one of life's inequities to befall you and you could find yourself on the other side of the table hoping there is enough to go 'round.....do what you can, please

What is wrong with you people? Are you so self involved that you have stopped caring about anyone other than yourself? This is a facility that tries desperately to make a difference and help people who really need help. If you cannot donate food because it is difficult for you to make ends meet, perhaps find another way to help. Stop treating people who use Shelter House like something you stepped in. They are humans and deserve to be treated as such.

The shelter house hands out kits because the TBHU does not want HIV/Aids or other transmittal Diseases spreading around the Tbay community. They serve food to the ones in need because some don't even have a fridge with food in it. Yes, you may struggle to make ends meet..but what about the people who struggle to have a meal in their stomache atleast once a day? Thunder bay makes me sick, with all the inconsiderate people. Try stepping into their shoes and see how much of a difference there is than from where you're sitting now probably snacking on some food. I been on my own and I am not even 18 yet, and I know how people feel when they need to depend on someone elses generosity. It sucks, but thank god there are services here in town that help the ones in need. If I could, I would give food to the shelter, but as for myself I am struggling too! Take some time to think how it would be in that position people! Have a heart. One can of soup won't hurt.

It only takes a second for a event to put you into the same situation as those who would receive the donations.
If you are having trouble making ends meet, do use all justice and sell your smart phone, cancel your internet service so we don't have to listen to you whine about how tough your life is.

my 2 cents says:
For those who are concerned about free hand outs, that's fine don't donate. How about instead you go down there, actually take a look, meet the people using the service and volunteer your time. You may educate yourself and stop making generalized statements based on ignorance.

@tsb, I know what its like to have nothing so don't just assume.
@myopinionmatters, nobody never helped me, did everything on my own. I have a lot and started out literally with nothing.
@my 2 cents, there are people who have money, homes that go there for a meal. I have seen it for myself. So explain that? Because they are lonely?
@nvjgu, the mining will never happen. If it does, we won't be alive to see it.
@mystified, if it takes one event for someone to go end up at the shelter house then they obviously did not plan their finances well did they?

How about hitting up some of the local businesses for money (and maybe some of the big bois with all that extra revenue left over, ie Bombardier (and yes, I know I spelled boys wrong))?

Campaigning to the already declining classes is good but many people cannot even afford to feed themselves let alone somebody else in need.
