FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION -- A report released this week on dealing with mercury contamination in the city's north harbour is concerning for Fort William First Nation.

The plan calls for dredging the toxic sludge from the city's north harbour and hauling it to the Mission Bay disposal site near Chippewa Park.

The close proximity to the First Nation is something that needs to be addressed, says Chief Georjann Morriseau.

There is approximately 400,000 cubic metres of contaminated sediment in Lake Superior near the former Cascades mill.  Removing it and transporting it by barge comes with a price tag of $40 million to $50 million.

It may be years before any work takes place.

Still, Morriseau says it's on the radar.

The final report was released after years of public meetings and studies on the issue.

The close proximity to the lake is probably a bigger concern. We're basically relocating a toxic sludge from one part of the bay to another.

Surely there will be a thorough environmental assessment and legal consultation before anything is done; this is mercury.

The first thing to establish is who is going to pay for this remediation. Then we can decide how to deal with it and where it is going.

And we gave up the 'spring fed' gravity fed Lake On the mountain...?

Someday we should go back to that water on the mountain, for drinking purposes anyway.
