Former councillor Sargon Khubyar files to run in at-large race

By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com

Thunder Bay’s at-large race grew by one on Friday.

Former Northwood councilor Sargon Khubyar has thrown his hat into the race, which now includes 16 hopefuls.

Khubyar served three years on council, from 1994 to 1997, losing to Bill Mauro in the 1997 municipal election.

On Tuesday it’s widely expected at-large Coun. Rebecca Johnson will file her papers in her bid to seek a fourth term.

With regards to the proposed Event Centre the issue is not whether a particular candidate is for or against the building of a new hockey rink now it is whether they believe the public should have a direct vote in the form of a plebiscite.

One member of council stated the public is not capable of making an informed decision.

If one member of council stated that, you would be able to provide a link to the quote or at least name the person such quote is attributable to then wouldn't you Sign guy?

Or is this just more of your posturing and attempting to sway the public towards your lost cause?

The event centre "IS" the lost cause, regardless of who made that statement. I believe it was Aldo Ruberto who implied that the public was not smart enough to make that decision. You cant have everything served to you on a silver platter, just because you dont believe it! If you had been keeping up with tne news on the issue you would already know that pretty much the entire council and administration are of this opinion. Links? We dont need no stinkin' links!

I keep up with the news, thanks much.

Ray makes a lot of blanket statements to further his fear mongering campaign and to keep the canes rattling. He wants to make claims, the burden of proof falls to him to back it up.

And we need no links? Are you now supporting the Sale of Municipal?

Good luck to all running !

Please don't allow this 'build it and they will come' continue to be a selling feature of city spending....did we not learn from Victoriaville ? and the Casino ?

Good to see Sargon place his name and services before the people of Thunder Bay. When on Council previously he was an experienced voice of reason, sound common sense and respectful of all participants. Over the years he has also give a great deal of his time, energy and passion to working with youth sports i.e. "reffing" high school basketball. Of all the candidates running so far at large - he is my number one choice.

Whatever the makeup of the next council let's hope they get spending and taxes under control as pointed out by the Chamber of Commerce.
Remember the Chamber of Commerce has warned the city that if wasteful spending by the city is not curtailed taxes will reach alarming levels. Many of us believe they already are.

We the voters look forward to hearing from all the candidates including Sargon Khubyar to hear their platform and to see how they can actually make Thunder Bay a safer and better place to live.

And remember that the Chamber of Commerce had to revise their report to correct errors right Sign guy? Oh that's right; you aren't concerned about facts, just presenting your flawed vision.
