ATIKOKAN, Ont. -- Ontario Power Generation has been hit with a major fine.

It comes over a failure to follow approved safety procedures at the Atikokan Generating Station.

According to a news release issued by the Ministry of Labour Thursday, the offence occurred in November of 2012 as two workers attempted to remove gasket material from a pipe in the plant.

Work was stopped when it was determined no efforts had been made to to conduct required tests to ensure the material did not contain asbestos.

As a result, OPG has been handed a $40,000 fine, along with a further ten-thousand dollar victim surcharge penalty.
