Province makes good on Ring of Fire Development Corporation promise

By Jamie Smith, tbnewswatch.com

THUNDER BAY -- The province has announced its long-awaited Ring of Fire Development Corporation, but admits there's still a lot of work to do.

The non-profit corporation will have four interim board members, all senior public servants, and will now start reaching out to First Nations, industry and the province hopes the federal government to get more partnerships.

Eventually the corporation will be responsible for establishing the best transportation corridor into the potentially lucrative mining area as well as advise on how to best spend the province's $1 billion commitment to fund the infrastructure.

"To have the corporation oversee that is vital," Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle said.

In the meantime it will run on a $2 million operating budget from the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines to get started.

The board, which includes Infrastructure Ontario's Ehren Cory, assistant deputy minister for  economic environmental justice and intergovernmental policy Rob Dowler, transportation assistant deputy minister Linda McAusland and northern development assistant deputy minister Bill Thornton, will seek out "formal partnerships" Gravelle said.

"The partnerships are the key," he said.

What the board will eventually look like or how many members there will be has yet to be determined. While it will be headquartered in Thunder Bay, the exact location is also not yet known.

Originally announced late last year, establishing the development corporation was promised within 60 days of the Liberal government taking office, a promise Gravelle said Premier Kathleen Wynne has now kept.

The RoF was always intended to be a 25 year project. Expectations have confused people.

2 million you get office space and budget for 4 senior bureaucrat's to shuffle paper and for travel back and forth, and meetings. The FN will set up their own Economic Development Corp funded with Federal money. Sometime around 2017 after lots of meetings with the various players from all sides, there may be a plan with respect to Ring of Fire.

Is another level of public bureaucracy genuinely helpful? Surely it is long past time to engage skilled, professional companies and individuals with actual business plans, expertise and precise goals who can move this region and its economic potential forward. Stakeholders in the region including First Nations, mining companies and developers/contractors should be the driving force behind any development not government representatives draining taxpayers with repetitive reports, theories and inertia.

Not to worry here folks!

Overseas interests will soon run both the ring of fire and Bombardier, and then we can begin to learn what it really takes to succeed.

Possibly "Gravelle" translates to Joke or Sham in some obscure language. This "New Development Corporation" is nothing more than an expensive smoke screen to hide the reality that the provincial government has no idea whatsoever as to how to effectively and efficiently move ROF forward. Get the provincial government out of the way. There is no place for more bureaucrats and their inherent ludicrous cost in what must be a responsive and responsible business model capable of making meaningful, timely and necessary decisions. Get a "Port Authority Model" rail line operational now with feeder roads into communities throughout the region. Leave government to try to work (as they are supposed to) upon education, health and energy requirements. Otherwise "Get Out of the Way" Premier Wynne/Minister Gravelle. Let business and community leaders define their needs then make normal application for available Federal/Provincial funds while justifying their projects to private investors.

What a joke. This provincial government is going to completely collapse the Ontario economy if they don't get their act together, and hopefully not take the country with it. They have had years to get this moving, and this is what they come up with. We should all be ashamed of ourselves for voting them back in.

They're making the same announcement as last fall. Oh, they've added four unnamed bureaucrats to lead it. This was time well spent.
