THUNDER BAY - The summer’s heavy rainfall has put a damper on returning to school this week for some south-side high school students.

The main gymnasium at Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute is closed while under repairs from water damage sustained this summer.

Lakehead Public Schools director of education Ian MacRae said the amount of rain exceeded the drain capacity on the high school’s roof and water leaked onto the gym floor.

“Unfortunately it caused some of the gym floor to lift and that’s now being replaced and repainted,” he said Wednesday, the first day of the new school year.

“The difficulty with that is it’s a fairly labour-intensive task so it’s going to take a little longer than we hoped.”

The gym should be ready by the end of the month and MacRae said fortunately the school has a second gymnasium and an large playing field beside it so they should be able to accommodate all physical education classes and extra-curricular activities.

“We don’t anticipate much of a blip in our day-to-day operations,” he said.
