THUNDER BAY -- After investigating several complaints, city police now believe emails sent to university students were legitimate and not part of a phishing scam.

THUNDER BAY -- After investigating several complaints, city police now believe emails sent to university students were legitimate and not part of a phishing scam.

Last week the Thunder Bay Police Service issues a warning following complaints of possible identity theft. The complaints centred around possible fraudulent emails claiming to come from the National Student Loan Centre.

Students worried the emails were phishing for their Social Insurance Numbers.

But detectives have confirmed with the loan centre that the emails are legitimate.

Students who replied to the email and are concerned about identity theft may follow up with the National Student Loan Centre.

City police have renewed their warning for citizens to exercise caution when responding to any email soliciting personal information.
