OPP investigating death in Pikangikum First Nation

PIKANGIKUM FIRST NATION, Ont. – Provincial police are investigating the death of a teen in this remote Far North First Nation community.

Officials with the OPP say police officers with the Pikangikum First Nation Police Service responded to a call about an injured man laying on a trail near BB’s Road in the community at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

When officers arrived at the scene they found the man to be unresponsive. The man was transported to the community’s nursing station where he was pronounced dead.

Pikangikum First Nation Police Service with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Crime Unit under the direction of Detective Inspector Randy Heida of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

The victim has been identified as Jethro Felix Keeper, 18, of Pikangikum First Nation. 

A post mortem examination took place in Kenora on Tuesday.

The results of the examination are not being released at this time.

The investigation continues.
