Bombardier, Unifor working to return plant to normal operations

THUNDER BAY -- The city’s Bombardier plant is beginning to return to normal operations one week after nearly 900 striking workers voted to return to the job.

Starting earlier this week some Unifor Local 1075 employees, who had been on strike for nearly two months, got back to work as the company began the process of recalling their workers.

Unifor Local 1075 president Dominic Pasqualino said about 250 of those employees are back to work, with some expected back next week and the rest returning the following week.

“By Sept. 29 everybody should be back to work,” Pasqualino said.

There have been a few issues around vacation and vacation pay, which Bombardier and Unifor officials had been addressing throughout the week.

“I think this solves most of the problems that are out there. I think the members are happy to have this worked out so their vacations aren’t ruined and they can schedule them at a later date,” Pasqualino said.

“I think there is certainly some anticipation with people going back to work but generally speaking I think everybody is happy to be heading back to work.”
