Meet the Candidates: Linda Rydholm

Linda Rydholm believes a ward councillor should be accessible and accountable to the residents they represent.

It is that bond between a councillor and their ward that leads her to mount another push to be Neebing’s voice at city hall.

The incumbent will be seeking her fourth straight, and fifth overall, term in council chambers next month when the city heads to the polls.

“I find it very gratifying to work on projects, whether it is a park, roads, river and trails. It’s exciting to actually accomplish improvements for the ward,” she said.

Rydholm identifies erosion control along the Kaministiquia River and water drainage work as two significant improvements that have been made during her tenure.

One of the biggest issues for many residents in the mostly rural ward is traffic on the roads as she has heard from many people who say many people are driving more dangerously than ever.

“People are speeding on every road or street,” Rydholm said.

One measure has already been enacted to improve speeding in residential neighbourhoods as speed limit signs have been installed in the middle of the roadway in the Parkdale subdivision.

After last year’s James Street Swing Bridge fire resulted in Highway 61 and Chippewa Road being the only access to Fort William First Nation, Rydholm worked with the provincial Ministry of Transportation and OPP to improve safety.

She prides herself on taking her cues from the people.

When it comes to the proposed event centre, Rydholm is hearing more and more dissenting voices when canvassing during her campaign.

People are telling her they don’t want to see their taxes increased, she said.

Last April she was one of the lone voices on council to recommend an event centre plebiscite be placed on the ballot.

“It’s most unfortunate because we would have had a good idea going forward on the support for this event centre,” she said. “It’s important we ascertain the amount of support that is there…There was an opportunity missed.”
