THUNDER BAY – A Tuesday afternoon fire at a city restaurant is under investigation.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to the Jade Express restaurant at the corner of Bay Street and Court Street around 2:30 p.m. and spent about two hours ensuring the fire was brought under control.

Platoon Chief Larry Warner said the fire appears to have started outside and worked its way up the exterior of the building.

“It looks like it started down at the base level,” Warner said. “We’re unsure at this time (of the cause). It could have been anything. The owner doesn’t know.”

While the outside of the building sustained damage, the fire did not spread to the interior, Warner added.

Firefighters were working on the building’s roof, using chainsaws and axes to cut away sections contain the fire. Warner said those measures were taken to ensure it had not reached the inside walls.

The department’s fire prevention unit will probe the blaze to try to determine the cause.

Warner said there was one person inside at the time of the fire but they were able to exit the building and did not require medical attention.
