Domtar makes unspecified payment on outstanding taxes to Dryden

DRYDEN, Ont. -- There’s been a breakthrough in the financial dealings between the town of Dryden and the Domtar Mill.

DRYDEN, Ont. -- There’s been a breakthrough in the financial dealings between the town of Dryden and the Domtar Mill.

In a joint news release, the city and the company announced the mill has made an unspecified but "substantive payment" on its outstanding taxes.

The City of Dryden increased Domtar's taxes by more than 120 per cent this year, and the company had yet to pay.

The tax hike was in response to a 2012 property assessment that reduced the mill's value from $51 million dollars to $14 million and reduced its tax burden by $1.1-million.

No one from the City of Dryden or Domtar was available for comment.
