THUNDER BAY -- The airport will soon be home to a new hotel.

A five-storey Hampton Inn and Suites is scheduled to begin construction next week between Arthur Street and Highway 61, nearly directly adjacent to the Valhalla Inn.

Company official Tiffany Wilson confirmed on Friday that the hotel is tentatively scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2016 and have 96 rooms.

Work has already begun at the site with crews clearing land directly northeast of the Valhalla Inn.

The new hotel would be accessed by Curry Street, which intersects with Valhalla Inn Drive.

City building official Des Stolz said indications are that construction costs are expected to be about $6 million.
