Mauro responds to Queen's Park questions about proposal to shorten moose hunting season

THUNDER BAY – Ontario moose hunters might soon be looking at a shorter season.

The Ministry of Natural Resources is proposing to reduce the length of the legal moose hunting season as a measure to improve moose population numbers which aerial surveys show to be in trouble.

Natural Resources Minister Bill Mauro was questioned in Queen’s Park on Monday about how to ensure the moose population would be sustained without negatively impacting industry dependent upon the hunt.

He said the people most involved in the hunt are the ones who say there must be reform to protect population numbers that “are not good.”

“I would say in my community of Thunder Bay there are people who are telling me absolutely to shut the hunt down,” Mauro responded.

“It’s taken us years to get to this situation and it’s going to take us some time to fix it but I’m not going to kick the can down the road. We need to make some decisions and we need to make sure we get this absolutely right.”

A first phase consultation study addressed concerns from resident hunters and tourist outfitters, specifically around their tag allotments.

A second phase, which is expected to begin soon, will take a broader approach and explore other opportunities to sustainably manage the moose population.
