Law mandating carbon monoxide detectors in homes, apartments now in effect

THUNDER BAY – Starting Wednesday, it is provincial law for any home with a fireplace, attached garage or fuel burning appliance to have carbon monoxide detectors.

THUNDER BAY – Starting Wednesday, it is provincial law for any home with a fireplace, attached garage or fuel burning appliance to have carbon monoxide detectors.

The new Ontario law mandates that the CO detectors must be placed outside of any sleeping area.

Thunder Bay Fire Information officer Anthony Stokaluk says landlords should note that they are responsible for their properties.

“If you’re a renter in a building that has less than six units and you do not have a carbon monoxide detector yet, definitely contact your landlord,” Stokaluk said during an interview with CKPR Radio.

“Buildings that have more than six units have to apply with these regulations by Oct. 15.”

The fine for not complying with the law is $360.
