THUNDER BAY – An afternoon grass fire kept city firefighters busy.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews are tackling a blaze in a wooded area off Maureen Street, across the rail tracks east of Fort William Road.

The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the largely industrial area. Three pumpers were at the scene working to control the fire.

Some railway ties burnt and trains were temporarily stopped from accessing nearby grain elevators, though train traffic has resumed as normal.

Smoke was visible in the sky from the opposite end of the city.

The cause is undetermined but not believed to be suspicious.
