THUNDER BAY - As of Monday morning, the city's public school board has not received formal notice of a strike date from the union representing high school teachers.

The Lakehead District School Board confirmed in a notice posted on their website they have received a No-Board report from the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, which is a requirement before announcing legal strike action.

In addition to the report, the union must give five days notice before walking off the jobs as per the Ontario Labour Relations Act. That notice has not yet been provided.

The Lakehead board is one of seven across the province to have received a notice for conciliation filing, which is a step for teachers to be in a legal strike position.

High school teachers at the Durham District School Board went on strike Monday morning, the first to do so across the province.

If a strike occurs Hammarskjold High School, Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute and Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute will be closed and the board said the following measures will be taken:

  • All regular instructional programs for grade 9 to 12 students will be cancelled.
  • Extracurricular activities, field trips and school events will be cancelled.
  • Buses for secondary students will not operate. Buses will continue their routes for elementary students only.
  • Teachers may be picketing outside Lakehead Public Schools secondary schools. Picketing is not expected to take place outside Lakehead Public Schools elementary schools.
