THUNDER BAY --  A plan to turn a former high school into condominium got unanimous support from city council Monday night.

At around 148,000 square feet the former Hillcrest High School isn't an easy place to convert into 75 condominiums. But developer Robert Zanette told city council that the proposed Hillcrest Neighbourhood Village is all about sound planning.

"This is infill and intensification in its purest form," he said.

It fits with the city's official plan, helps affordable housing with the majority of units coming in at under $200,000 and everyone involved with the project is local Zanette said. It also saves an historic city building from demolition.

The school is already zoned for residential but required council's approval to change from apartments to condominiums. Zanette said four model units are already under construction and should be on display soon.
