City of Thunder Bay news release:
May 1, 2015 - This week is all about youth in Thunder Bay according to Acting Mayor Rebecca Johnson, who officially proclaimed May 1-7 as “Youth Week” today at City Hall.
National Youth Week celebrates the positive contributions that youth make to their communities, their achievements, and their volunteerism. Coun. Johnson and local youth raised the Youth Week flag at City Hall to kick-off the celebrations.
“Youth Week encourages all community members to celebrate youth, to recognize the positive contributions that young people make to their communities and provide opportunities for all young people to voice concerns or issues relevant to them,” said Coun. Johnson.
“Young people are out every day doing great things; you need only look at the local high schools, community groups, sports organizations, to see young people volunteering their time to make positive change in our community.”
The week is also designated as National Youth Arts Week, a nation-wide celebration of the creative contributions that youth make to their communities. The flag-raising event featured the dance talents of Gr. 8 Class from Pope John Paul II.
The City of Thunder Bay and Community Organizations host a number of free or low-cost events. These fun and interactive events are a great way for youth to spend time with friends in a safe, youth-friendly environment and celebrate being a youth in Thunder Bay!
“We want youth to know their value and celebrate their involvements and contributions throughout the year.” said Kim Baskin, Program Supervisor – Youth for the Recreation & Culture Division. “To celebrate, we’ve lined up some great activities for youth to try throughout the week with everything from visual arts to sports, and everything in between”.
Other activities include a twoonie swim at the Complex, sports nights, cupcake wars, Paintball Mountain, Trampoline Park, and many more over the next week.
Following Youth Week, the Youth Week Awards will be held on Friday May 8th, where various youth will be honoured for their achievements and contributions.
