THUNDER BAY -- Twenty-minutes may not be a lot of time but it can go a long way to help make the city a cleaner place.

The annual Spring up to Clean Up campaign hit the city streets Friday, seeing around 10,000 people spending 20 minutes picking up litter.

"Around the city streets, parks and around their workplaces," EcoSuperior waste reduction and litter prevention coordinator Shannon Costigan said as city staff made their way around Paterson Park.

"Everybody has a role to play in making Thunder Bay a beautiful place to live so it's nice to see so many people committed to coming up and taking some time to clean up after the long winter."

Coun. Rebecca Johnson said people in the community need to take responsibility for the litter they create.

"Whether it's cigarette butts, coffee cups for garbage," she said.

"The corporation does not create that. To me if it's the community creating the litter then they should be picking it up."

Last year during the 20-minute makeover 720 bags of garbage and 140 bags of recycling from the streets.
