THUNDER BAY -- The earlier arrival of spring this year has been good news for the Port of Thunder Bay.

Cargo stats for the month of April have been released, and they show a big difference over last year.

The port saw more 770,000 tonnes of cargo moved last month, up from just 134,000 in 2014.

The majority of the cargo was grain, with close to 700,000 tonnes loaded onto 33 ships at the various grain elevators.

Port officials say the cargo totals are 12 per cent higher than the 10-year average for the month of April.

The harbour opened approximately two weeks earlier than last year, when thick ice on the Great Lakes delayed the start of the shipping season until April 21.

But the port still managed to set a 17-year high for grain shipping last year.  And officials are forecasting another above-average season this year.
