Former First Nations police officer facing 34-year-old rape charges

Ontario Provincial Police have laid sexual assault charges against a fellow former police officer in a historic case dating back to 1981. Fifty-six-year-old Eli Mandamin of Shoal Lake First Nation was arrested on Wednesday and now faces two charges.

Fifty-six-year-old Eli Mandamin of Shoal Lake First Nation was arrested on Wednesday and now faces two charges.

Mandamin, charged under laws in place 34 years ago, has been charged with rape and sexual intercourse with a female under 16.

The alleged incident occurred in March 1981when the accused was a First Nation constable with the OPP in Shoal Lake No. 39.

He’s been released and will appear in Kenora’s Ontario Court of Justice on July 9.
