Free compost is coming, starting on Monday.

City officials say they’ll offer it up just east of the former landfill entrance on John Street Road from Monday to Friday from 8:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. while supplies last.

“We’re happy to again offer free compost to residents,” said Jason Sherband, co-ordinator of the city’s Solid Waste Diversion and Recycling. “This compost is the result of the leaf and yard waste picked up during our curbside collection programs, which is blended with organic waste dropped off at the landfill site year-round.”

The compost is ideal for use in landscaping, flower beds and lawns, but is not suitable for vegetable gardens.

Sherband reminded residents to dispose of any hazardous household waste before visiting the compost area. They should also bring a shovel or container to put the compost in. There is a half-tonne limit per resident.
