Two Northern Ontario cities share $96K in provincial funds

Ontario Investing in Economic Development in Kenora and Timiskaming
Province Helping Northern Communities with Economic Planning


May 26, 2015 11:00 A.M.Ministry of Northern Development and Mines Ontario is helping communities in the Kenora and Timiskaming areas explore new economic development opportunities in order to help create jobs and generate new revenue sources and increased business.

Through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the province is investing nearly $96,000 in three projects:

Kenora is receiving $50,000 to prepare a strategic plan aimed at identifying community priorities related to tourism and other emerging industries to diversify the local economy;

Black River-Matheson is receiving $25,048 to complete a ten-year economic development plan for the town, aimed at new business opportunities such as an increase in mining activity in the area;

Markstay-Warren is receiving $20,548 to develop a business plan that will identify opportunities to diversify the local economy, including support for new mining operations in the region.

Investing in economic development in the North is part of the government's plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people's talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.
