NDP Leader demands premier allow Northwestern Ontario input on Hydro One sell-off

Queen’s Park – Today NDP Leader Andrea Horwath demanded Premier Wynne allow Northwestern Ontario municipalities to have their say on the Liberal’s sell-off of Hydro One.

“Will the premier take Hydro One out of her Stephen Harper–style omnibus budget and give opportunities for groups like NOMA, the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, and allow them to have their say in some kind of public process? It’s the least they deserve,” Horwath said.

NOMA has said that northern communities are going to be hit hard by the premier’s Hydro One sell-off.  Horwath cited their president who said, “There has been no consultation with these communities, which is in our opinion unfair.  We believe that this decision to sell off Hydro One assets is merely short-term gain for long-term pain.”

“It’s not just NOMA,” Horwath said. “Northern municipalities are speaking out as well because they do not want to have to pay the price for this premier’s selling off of Hydro One.”

The NDP leader said Kenora city council will be sending the premier a letter opposing the sale of Hydro One, while the city of Fort Frances is supporting NOMA’s resolution.

“These municipalities deserve to have a say. Will the premier take Hydro One out of her Stephen Harper-style omnibus bill and let the municipalities of Fort Frances and Kenora have a public hearing to have their say?”
