THUNDER BAY -- Just because the public can't see it doesn't mean work isn't being done on a new waterfront hotel the developer says.

Construction on the new Delta hotel will begin this year and although Resolve Group Inc. president Gisele MacDonald can't confirm a specific completion date for the eight-storey 150-room hotel, she expects it to be finished sometime in late 2016. MacDonald said a lot of the work to-date has been underground.

"There has been lots going on behind- the-scenes that you just probably can't see," she said in the city Wednesday afternoon.

Liens, worth around $1.45 million,  against the project haven't impacted the timeline at all MacDonald said. While Marriott International took over Delta Hotels, a move completed last month, the waterfront hotel will be a Delta. The merger delayed the local project by three months but MacDonald said having Marriott on board is a good thing.

"It's just allowing us a lot more expertise," she said.

Drawings are around half complete and tenders should go out soon MacDonald said. Resolve is holding a media conference with Marriott in Thunder Bay June 11.
