THUNDER BAY -- The case remains open, but progress is at a standstill in the investigation into the cause of last month's massive fire at Great West Timber.

The blaze consumed the old sawmill on June 17. All that remains now is a pile of debris full of hazardous material, which needs to be disposed of properly.

Ontario Fire Marshal's investigator Tim Irish says as part of the fire prevention and protection act, an order was written to the property owners by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.

That order states that whenever demolition begins the fire prevention officers will be allowed back on scene, and the investigation will continue.

But when exactly that happens isn’t up to the investigator.

Irish says the demolition is the responsibility of the owners, therefore the investigation cannot go ahead until the owner moves forward with the demolition.
