Sioux Lookout's plan to upgrade its airport is getting off the ground after a funding announcement Thursday.

The Federal and provincial governments each announced $4.2 million for the project Thursday while the municipality has already set aside $4 million of the estimated $12 million it will take to expand and upgrade the terminal.

The airport hosts more than 120,000 travelers each year, flying to 39 First Nations and serving a remote population of 30,000 people.

Sioux Lookout mayor Doug Lawrance said the airport provides a critical link for people in his community and the First Nations to the Far North, who rely on air transportation for most of the year.

It's also a key connection for health care, social services, education and the emerging resource development sector.

The funding was announced by federal natural resources minister Greg Rickford and Ontario's northern development and mines minister Michael Gravelle, who say this is an important community infrastructure project.
