THUNDER BAY -- Bob Chiarelli says every time he's in Thunder Bay he's reminded that the local generating station has made history twice.

It was the last station in Ontario to burn coal and the first to use advanced biomass, which he got an up-close of Thursday afternoon as he toured the plant. Provincial energy minister Chiarelli said it's part of the energy mix the province has been trying to clean up over the past few decades.

"We try accommodate the price pressures with programming and conservation," he said.

"At the end of the day the system is clean."

Earlier Thursday in the city Chirarelli watched a signing between Wataynikaneyap Power, RES Canada and FortisOntario to build transmission lines to remote First Nations communities.
