Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Media Release

Two men have been fined a total of $2,750 for shooting a moose from a motorboat.

James Adams of Old Hickory, Tennessee, and Randy Sides of Montgomery City, Missouri, pleaded guilty and were fined $1,250 and $1,500 respectively for shooting a moose from a motorboat. Adams shot the moose from the boat while Sides operated it, making Sides a party to the offence.

Court heard that on October 18, 2014, a conservation officer contacted the men on Robert Lake while conducting an aircraft patrol north of Red Lake. Upon investigating, the officer determined that a cow moose had been shot from a motorboat used by the men to hunt. The moose and Adams’s firearm were seized as evidence during the investigation.  Upon conviction, the moose was forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Robert McNally heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Kenora, on August 11, 2015.

The ministry reminds hunters that it is illegal to discharge a firearm from a vehicle or motorboat. Laws regarding the use of firearms are in place for the protection and safety of hunters and members of the public. It is also illegal to possess a loaded firearm in or on a vehicle or motorboat.
