THUNDER BAY -- Thornley Christiansen was the last surviving Merchant Navy officer in Thunder Bay.

He died last September at age 87. Christianson and roughly 30 other Thunder Bay residents served during the Second World War, running supplies across the ocean to the Allies. And their service is still being recognized as a flag was raised Thursday outside of city hall to commemorate the sacrifice of the Merchant Navy.

Russell Christiansen, one of Christiansen's seven children, said they're proud of their father's service as a sailor during the war and proud to see the city pay tribute.

Christiansen was the last of three local merchant navy veterans to pass away in the last year.
