THUNDER BAY -- A fire couldn't stop a weekly tradition that's been more than a decade in the making.

For 12 years local runners have been meeting at Fresh Air Experience every Thursday night. With no race, no competition, the night is just about getting together with friends.

"It's just designed to get people out running," manager Alan Cranston said.

But runners, cyclists and skiers were shocked when a fire ravaged the Memorial Avenue store last Friday. Over the weekend the running community was determined to see the night continue.

"It's been a meeting place for us for so long it's a habit," volunteer Marilee Chase said.

"It's like a family. As soon as this happened we were lost. We didn't know where were were supposed to go to meet with our friends to run."

That family is familiar to Sandy Guthrie, who's worked for the store for 23 years. Just because there was no building to meet in this week didn't mean the runners were going to stop. And so on Thursday runners and organizations met to do what they do best.

Organizers say further runs in support of Fresh Air are planned next week.
