City no longer accepting yard waste in plastic bags

THUNDER BAY -- The question has traditionally been paper or plastic. But the city will no longer be accepting clear plastic bags for leaf and yard waste starting this year.

THUNDER BAY -- The question has traditionally been paper or plastic. But the city will no longer be accepting clear plastic bags for leaf and yard waste starting this year.

Instead, the city is promoting the use of Kraft paper bags, and giving away two of them to each household.

The manager of solid waste diversion and recycling, Jason Sherband, says plastic bags pollute the compost at the landfill.

The new Kraft bags not only save the city money in the long run, but will also help with composting.

The next Kraft Bag giveaway will be happening on Oct. 15 at the Victoriaville Civic Center, as well as the Mary JL Black Library.
