MNR Media Release

A Terrace Bay man has been fined a total of $6,000 for deer hunting offences.

Gary J. Salesse pleaded guilty and was fined $2,000 for failing to attach a game hunting seal to a deer, $2,000 for possessing illegally-killed wildlife, $500 for transporting illegally-killed wildlife, $1,000 for unlawfully obstructing a conservation officer and $500 for knowingly making a false statement to a conservation officer.

Court heard that on November 24, 2014, conservation officers contacted Salesse while investigating a complaint of an abandoned deer in Wildlife Management Unit 8, south of Dryden, where Salesse was hunting.  Officers, including the canine unit, investigated two kill sites and discovered that Salesse had shot and abandoned a buck deer in the bush. He had also harvested a second buck and a doe which were both at a residence of a friend; neither deer was properly tagged. While in the bush with investigating officers, Salesse phoned the friend and requested that he hide the buck so the officers would not find it.

Justice of the Peace Danalyn MacKinnon heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Dryden, on November 19, 2015.
