City’s jobless rate rises in January: StatsCan

THUNDER BAY – The city’s unemployment rose in the first month of the New Year. New data released by Statistics Canada shows the local jobless rate jumped to 6.5 per cent in January. That’s up from the 5.

New data released by Statistics Canada shows the local jobless rate jumped to 6.5 per cent in January.

That’s up from the 5.8 per cent recorded in December, 2015.

The increase was much sharper than national figures, however, Thunder Bay’s rate remains significantly below the nation’s average. Canada’s average unemployment rate rose to 7.2 per cent in January, up from 7.1 per cent in December.

The provincial numbers remained relatively unchanged at 6.7 per cent.
