Once living outside the law, backyard chickens in the city could soon be legit

THUNDER BAY -- Backyard chickens in the city might not have to live outside the law for much longer. While some people in Thunder Bay do keep chickens on their property, it's currently against city bylaws in any area not designated as rural.

THUNDER BAY -- Backyard chickens in the city might not have to live outside the law for much longer.

While some people in Thunder Bay do keep chickens on their property, it's currently against city bylaws in any area not designated as rural. The city's food strategy, which city council supported in 2014, is looking to change that with a public consultation in April.

Coordinator Kendal Donahue said people will be able to give their input and learn more about urban chickens.

"Really this is something that is coming from the public." she said.

What changing the bylaw might mean, from how many chickens a person can keep to how to deal with noise and other concerns, has yet to be determined. Coun. Rebecca Johnson said there are people in the city who have chickens already without much concern other than the fact that it's technically not allowed.

"We need to first off legalize that," she said.

"I think council is open to it."

The meeting will be held April 6 at the CLE Heritage building.
