THUNDER BAY -- Eleven-year-olds Ella Gabriel and Caroline Dorey love winter carnival.

The Grade 6 students at St. Martin School on Thursday joined up to 800 other children and parents taking part in the evening celebration, sampling maple sugar, tobogganing and trying indoor curling at the school gym.

It was blast, said Caroline.

“It’s really fun to run and to watch people have so much fun,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to the toboggan races because I like tobogganing a lot.”

Her friend Ella also likes to people watch, especially the glee found in her younger school mates as they run around in the snow.

“My favourite thing is I like the skating and tobogganing as well,” she said.

Letizia Tremonte, principal at St. Martin School, said they had no idea the event would get so big so quickly.

A year ago a couple of staff members brought the idea to her, which she quickly approved.

“We had a really good turnout in our first year. We had all the activities we had here. This year we’re really proud to say we’ve actually

doubled it. We’re expecting nearly 800 people tonight to our winter carnival,” Tremonte said.

“It gets the community together. They get to have fun with their kids.”

Tremonte promised winter carnival would return in 2017.
