Public consultation is underway for an environmental assessment that will bring 262 new parking spaces to the waterfront.

The pre-tender design is a product of Thunder Bay corporate manager Lou Morrow’s July 2015 council report that will expand parking south of Pearl Street to the pumping station in Marina Park.

“There’s going to have to be a considerable amount of re-grading so the land will look quite different when it’s complete,” Morrow said.

The $2.5-million plan will create 106 parking spaces north of the Pump House, 53 spots in the Boater’s Parking Lot and 13 new on-street parking spots on the Sleeping Giant Parkway.

As part of the 2011 contract with the proposed Delta Hotel, an additional 90 spaces will be created as valet parking for its patrons.

The municipality has committed $1.5-million to the development in its 2016 budget and Morrow expects costs will be recovered for the hotel spaces by the end of the 25-year contract.

Public consultation on the environmental assessment will be open until Mar. 15, after which plans will be filed with the provincial Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
