THUNDER BAY -The Royal Bank currently has six locations in Thunder Bay, but that number will soon drop to four.

The Hodder Avenue branch is closing in December, with clients being moved to the RBC on Memorial Avenue.

The Westfort branch will close in January, with clients shifted to the new location on Arthur Street, less than three kilometres away.

Westfort Village business district spokesperson Jack Moro said the Royal Bank had a long history in this area.

RBC Regional vice-president Scott Simon insists the closures were not a cost-cutting measure.

He said more and more clients are using digital and online banking, while fewer people are coming into their branches to bank.

The 15-to-18 employees at each location will not be losing their jobs, and will be offered transfers to their other four locations, including the three larger branches built over the past few years.

Simon added that when the Westfort branch closes on Jan. 20, they will be keeping the ATM's there for the foreseeable future, because RBC owns that building.

The Hodder location will be completely closed, including the ATM's, on Dec. 9.
