THUNDER BAY – A Winnipeg man has been arrested and faces several charges after police discovered a partially sunken canoe on Wednesday morning on Wild Goose Bay.

Ontario Provincial Police, in a release issued to local media, said they were advised of the canoe, which contained camping gear and other items, but no paddle or lifejacket. The latter two pieces of equipment were later located in the lake, situated in Shuniah.

Search teams, including an aerial unit, searched Wild Goose Bay and surrounding area, when they found a man associated with the canoe at about 2:08 p.m. in Shuniah.

Police said further investigation revealed the 27-year-old man allegedly committed a break-and-enter and theft from a building in the Northwestern Ontario community, stealing the canoe from a local residence.

The suspect was charged with break and enter, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and failure to comply with a probation order.

He’s been remanded into custody at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
