Judgement day for the Marathon Pulp facility could come on Thursday.
The mill's receiver, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, is asking the Superior Court that they be absolved of all responsibility for the bankrupt mill, including any environmental liabilities.
The pulp mill closed and filed for bankruptcy protection in February, putting about 230 people out of work. On Friday, the Ministry of the Environment issued an order for site re-mediation, stating that the mill's owners permitted the discharge of contaminants and also controlled sewage works that discharged effluent into the Marathon harbour.
The ministry is asking the court to require the receiver to address environmental matters at the site, including financial assurances, before divesting itself of the facility.
Meanwhile, MP Bruce Hyer and union officials are calling on the court to keep alive a possible purchase of the facility and ensure the mill's wood supply stays in this region.
The court hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning in Toronto.
