An organization says the practice of calling out transit stops on Thunder Bay bus routes has not been consistent. The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), which represents about 900 visually impaired clients in the city, is supporting the Ontario Human Rights Commission's effort to force transit operators to verbally announce all bus stops.

Yesterday the commission announced it has gone to the Human Rights Tribunal to order transit systems in Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Hamilton to make changes within 30 days.

Local CNIB Associate Manager Janet Skinner said the organization has a good working relationship with the city when it comes to accessibility issues but drivers don't always call out bus stops to riders. She wants that to improve until a new automated system is implemented.
Skinner said a high percentage of the visually impaired use city transit because they aren't able to drive themselves.

They announce them IF YOU ASK THEM TO. They have ALWAYS done this. There is no shame in asking the driver to let you know when it gets to your stop!

How about skipping the distracting the transit drivers of calling out the stops every 10 seconds the person who needs assistance can simply tell the driver "Hello I am visual impaired can you please tell me when the Van Norman stop is..."

This would keep more focus on the road where it needs to be.

like someguy said tell the driver when you get on what stop you would like to get off at it's very simple but no some people have to make things more dificult for the drivers they have enough problems watching out for bad drivers

What if the driver forgets? I know if I was a driver, I would rather just call out all stops that remember five or six per trip.

Is it really that hard?

This story is quite funny for me, I no longer take public transit but a few months back, possibly last summer the driver called out all the stops, I thought it was the oddest thing, threw me right off guard, had no clue this is what was supposed to happen until today, mind you in the 3 years I relied on public transit only once did I hear the stops being called out. They are always good at letting you know when you ask them tho. ( I do admit it was annoying but good for visually impared people)

I guess they should also make sure they yell it out loud enough for the hearing impared. Just ask the driver to call the stops out when necessary. Just think of the poor driver who will have to yell all day.
