The flip of a coin decided the new Conservative nominee for one of Thunder Bay's two federal ridings.

Mike Auld and Richard Harvey were candidates for the Thunder Bay – Superior North Conservative nomination. About 170 people came to the nomination meeting at the Polish Hall Saturday. Only 110 voted and the result was a tie.

The two candidates were called into a back area to agree to a coin toss. When they came back out Auld was declared the winner.

"It is a hell of a way to win," said Auld. "Those are Robert’s Rules of Orders, the rule of our party and you have to go through with it."

Auld said he’d be travelling in his riding so people get to know him better. Although not mentioning any specific dates for an election he said if there is an election one of the big issues will be economics. He also brought up the issue of roadways in his speech and how Kenora is working to create a four-lane highway.

"Highways are so important to us. They are roads for resources; roads for transportation; roads to get to the United States to bring in imports and send out exports. If you don’t have four lane roads and you have a bumpy boat trail what are you going to do? You aren’t going to advance forward."

Auld said he would work to try to get a four-lane highway in Thunder Bay as well.

Auld is a retired woods manager from Buchanan Forest Produces working 30 years in the business. He has worked behind the scenes, raising money and such for provincial politics for 20 years. Auld is 66 years old. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.

Hey guys, make sure you return that coin to Harper. With the debts he is racking up, we will never every penny that we can get.

Only 110 people voted? No wonder this party never wins here! No one supports them!

They typically lose here because we're a city, and largely a province of needy people who fail to take responsibility or charge of their own affairs. They want the government to give them everything and do everything for them. The shame about it is when theres no real members of society working to pay for everything the worthless folk need, the ones with the worth quickly become the worthless. Its the Liberal flush scenario, it circles the bowl before it goes down..... And Harper's debts are only because the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc parties demanded a stimulus package. Stevie wanted no part in that at all, but did so on the behalf of the other partys who were threatening to waste taxpayers money on a coalition take over. I know its hard for Liberals to learn things, but check it out, thats how it happened way back at the beginning of this Spring.. So dont criticize the stimulus debt unless you voted conservative, anything else makes you a liberal/NDP hypocrite. Dont forget Harper actually lowered the GST..and if we had Dion in charge, the debt would have been triple what Stevie's got happening. And that's just the way it is, whether you like it or not.

The reason they only had 110 votes is because the vote was only held in Thunder Bay. In most large ridings there are several voting locations. The riding has thousands of voters living outside of the city. If the Conservatives want to win here, they need to open the doors to the likes of Greenstone, Nipigon (Richard Harvey's current town), Terrace Bay, Marathon, Schreiber... et cetera.

I agree with Gutshot. Thunder Bay alone should be its own riding, the rest of Northern Ontario can be another.
