Cops catch construction zone speeders

More than a dozen drivers face charges after being caught speeding through a construction zone on the Thunder Bay expressway.

OPP officers are stepping up enforcement on the highway where road crews are currently working. Constable Diana Cole said their traffic officers issued more than 20 speeding tickets yesterday in the reduced 70 kilometre per hour zone. Cole said speeding in a construction zone can have major consequences.

Reduced speed limits of 70 km/h will be posted intermittently between Balsam Street and Arthur Street over the rest of the construction season. Cole said the speed limit may go back up to 90 km/h at night depending on where the crews are working along the highway.

GOOD! I drove it yesterday and found it hard to keep to the limit because I was being tailgated. As soon as we were through the single lane section the tailgaters shot past, even though the limit was still 70 kph and I was actually doing the limit. I do think more speed limit signs are needed advising where the limit is 70 kph as it is easy to miss a single sign. In some areas where the limit is 70 kph, such as between John and Oliver today, and little or no work is actually occurring, it would be good to have more reminders. In fairness, if you missed the sign back near John St. you could easily have thought the limit was 90. Of course this would not excuse those brain dead drivers who speed where it is obvious that work is being done. Slow down people; it can get expensive if you have to go to Court and pay double the fine.

Thank god the police are starting to nail these careless individuals!! These people that work these construction jobs have families that want them home evry night SAFELY! There is NO reason for someone to gumboot 'er through a construction zone!

I am happy to see this. I drive the Expressway quite a bit and when the construction isn't on, I keep with the flow of traffic of 100km/h (including police officers talking on cellphones). During the construction, I set my cruise on 75km/h and just drive carefully to ensure these workers are safe. Think of it this way - they are working to improve our roads. We need to slow down through construction zones, and by police, fire and ambualnce vehicles with lights flashing on the side of the road. Come on people, just slow down a bit and you'll make it to your destination faster than if you get a ticket.

I have to agree that a few more signs would be helpful. I personally thought the consruction zone ended at the Harbour Expressway.
