People hoping to get their driver’s license continue to wait, but the lineup is starting to move.

The striking driver examiners, represented by the United Steelworkers union, rejected the most recent DriveTest offer by nearly 80 per cent Wednesday.

The union, which asked its members to reject the latest offer, is now asking the company to return to the bargaining table.

Despite the rejection, Drivetest managers are opening the doors to test centres in six locations, which includes Thunder Bay. Drivetest will offer limited services to customers who need licences for employment or who have registered for driver training.

"We will be giving priority to the people whose livelihood has been most impacted by this strike," said Paul Dalglish, managing director of DriveTest. "In doing so, we had to make some difficult choices about where to deploy our limited resources.

Drivetest centres will be opened in Thunder Bay, Toronto, Brampton, Ottawa, Kitchener and North Bay.

The limited services offered at those centres will include:
  • Written test for all classes of licence.
  • Road tests for commercial classified licences only.
  • Out-of-province and out-of-country licence exchanges.

"We hope that these focused efforts can begin to address the hardship this strike has caused," added Dalglish

Drivers who have had their licence expire after Aug. 24 due to a need for a retest will be covered by the automatic licence extension put in place by the Ministry of Transportation.

There is an estimated backlog of about 300,000 people waiting for tests and re-certifications.

In this economy with so many people out of work the Steelworkers again reject another offer? What's the common denominator folks?

With the economy the way it is and the number of people out of work, I say fire all of these useless morons and re-hire from the large pool of unemployed out there.

I would love to see how much money they have lost in wages compared to how much they will gain after the strike.

Nice to see the line wont be as big when i go back to get my G2. The reason they r striking comes from this. They hired this girl in the summer because it was busy and they needed the help, unexpectedly and with no just cause they fired her because it wasn't busy anymore and mad management do the job. To me that doesn't sound fair and give just cause for them to strike. As much as i would like for them to come back tomorrow it probably not gonna happen.

It's time the Provincial Government terminated Drive Test's contract and went back to their own driver examiners. Obviously contracting out doesn't work!

If unions give up their rights, accept bad working enviroments and less pay, we all loose. It'll trickle down and all workers will suffer in the end. I stand behind these workers!

You would not want to live in a world where unions are abolished.
There would be such poor working conditions , lack of safety and poor pay that one would have a tough time to suvive.
All it takes is a little research into history to see how that system functioned.
United we stand , divided its every man for himself and I will not hesitate to take you out at the knees to survive.
I for one don't want to live like that.

"History is a great teacher. Now everyone knows that the labor movement did not diminish the strength of the nation but enlarged it. By raising the living standards of millions, labor miraculously created a market for industry and lifted the whole nation to undreamed of levels of production. Those who attack labor forget these simple truths, but history remembers them."

eddylives , I am well aware. But that day has come and gone. Unions are now nothing more than cash-grabbers who want more than what the product is worth, who want more than what what they're entitled to, and who want more pay for doing so little. The auto industry made 60 dollars an hour per worker for pushing buttons and letting robotics do the work they're supposed to do. I see no reason why they should be paid the amount they are asking for to sit in a passenger seat and tell a driver how to drive. It's no different from a secretary desk job, and they don't make much either. You don't see THEM striking.

Ok, let's look at the obvious: The company won! So now why do they need to negotiate as they are now making money. Strike does not mean anything. Yesterday a bunch of eager 16 olds went in to get their G1. The only way for the workers to win is if no one goes and take their begginers or classified licence. Sorry union but you have no legs to stand on anymore, you might as well tell them to get another job. Just like INCO in Sudbury!

I wonder if the people holding the opinion that unions are useless would maintain that position if they were in a situation where a union was fighting for a better work environment for them. Uh oh, I said something that offends you because you know it's true and can't admit it!

This is a big greed thing. The employees have lost so much money now through lost wages they won't recover it with any deal. Every day they are out they should take a paycut now. Strikes are pointless and waste everyones tine

I've been following this story and the comments it provokes and I'm heartened to see two common themes appearing. The first regarding the role of the union and the second regarding the role of the Ontario government. I'm ignoring a third which labels the workers as lazy or greedy. It's ususally people unhappy at their own non unionized workplaces that bitch about greedy workers on strike.
I left DriveTest just after voting 'NO' to the original contract. I got the strong impression that neither the USW or SERCO really cared what happened to the employee. The first contract weighed heavily on issues that were only important to a minority of people. Seniority?? Everyone started on the same friggin day. The former MTO staff made their decisions whether to take a package or carry over their seniority to SERCO. The majority took the money. After ratifying the original contract, seniority was based on a random draw! So, for an issue that took up about a third of the contract, it came down to a lottery. Ridiculous!
The blame for this strike falls solidly on the shoulders of the government of Ontario. They allowed a foreign firm to monopolize a province wide service.
I would like to comment on a couple of the comparisons I've seen here. The stupidest one is comparing driver examiners to secretaries just because they both sit down for a living. I suppose by Escroft's reasoning truck drivers are pretty much the same as accountants which are the same as teachers . . . because they all sit down as well. Wake up. Secretaries don't have to let nervous 17 year old strangers try to merge on the QEW ten times a day.
The comparison with what happened to lever2000 and safeway unfortunately doesn't really apply here. Safeway and lever2000 have competitors.
Hey, what a novel idea. Competition.

Well , to all the union haters out there.
Being a union trades person I have witnessed the damage done on projects that were given to non union , un-regulated workers and it is really disturbing the extra money spent to fix the mess.
This type of problem is usually passed on to the tax payers in the end.
There are entities out there that will not hire any non union and for good reason.
So bash unions all you want but when it hurts you personally don't whine about it.
Think about it , would you want to have a product or service provided by an underqualified person. Causing injury or death??
And yes it has happened.

comments about secretaries not being in a union, if the secretaries, insurance brokers, etc in this world had an opportunity to have a union, you could bet I would join, AND GO ON STRIKE if need be. No union in these professions means more work, more demands, high stressfull situations, more, more, more, more without getting anything in return for our hard working efforts. If I had a union behind me this would not happen, there would be more regulations and support in the work place and less stress leave. So comparing these professions say to the trades unions is ridiculous, at least I do not have to work for 16 hours doing hard labour and not getting paid what I should be deserving of....blah to all the union haters out there.....Bubba Army Bubba Army

Some of these comments are ridiculous. Of course there have been situations where unions did not act in there employees best interest, but for the most part they do and yes you need unions in some companies to keep these greedy employers from taking advantage. In some cases i dont think the union has any business getting involved, for example the robins donut strike years ago. Totally ridiculous to convince these workers to go out on strike for 10 cents??? or whatever few cents it was. What happened? everyone strted going to Tim's and Robins is pretty much history in this city now. They have there place but don't belong everywhere.
